The People

Honduras has a rich and diverse culture that stems from it’s history. Depending on what part of the country you are visiting you will come across several different types of people. For instance, in the city of Trujillo, you will come across:

· Amerindians who are the mix of European (mainly Spanish) and Native Indian (they are the majority) & Garifunas who are of African descent

If you are going to the bigger cities you will come across a much more diverse crowd which consists of:

· Amerindians, Anglicans, Garifunas, Middle Eastern and other minorities.

The Language

Hondurans mainly speak Spanish. However, if you are on the islands and the bigger cities, there are many Hondurans who speak English. On the Islands, Hondurans also speak a form of Creole as well, but mainly speak Spanish

The Food

The staple foods are rice, beans, and tortillas. You can expect to eat tortillas and beans in every meal. Make sure to bring some beano! :) In all seriousness though, the tortillas are homemade and taste darn good!  You can also eat traditional American meals like burgers and pizza and are never limited to only the rice and beans. In our hotel, however, we want you experience the true Honduran cuisine, so our meals consist of traditional Honduran meals like arose con polo and of course beans and tortillas!

Culture

The Religion

The vast majority, about 97%, of Hondurans are Roman Catholic. There are Protestants, Evangelicals, Jews, Rastafarians and Muslims.

The Economy

Honduras is a developing country. Its main source of income comes from its agriculture and tourism. Unfortunately, there is an unequal distribution of wealth in the country which is quite visible once you visit. Fortunately, there are combined efforts from the Honduran government and American government to help increase the productivity of Honduras.
